Creating a Custom Topic

This note describes the process and best practices for creating a custom topic using the Market Pulse API.

Topic API

The Market Pulse API is covered in detail here: https://docs.5x5coop.com/docs/market-pulse-api

There are two parameters required to create a custom topic:

  • Topic Name: any character string, multiple words allowed
  • Description: up to 150 words, providing more detail on that topic

Defining a Topic

Topic

Ideally, topics are neither too general (e.g. - "Sales"), nor too specific (e.g. - "Hewlett Packard Model 5890 Gas Chromatagraph Mass Spectrometer"). If the topic is a brand (e.g. - "Hewlett Packard"), the description should summarize the products and services the company provides, what industry the company is in, and competitive brands.

Topic Description

The ideal topic description would contain enough information for the AI engine to score content pages for their strength on this topic. Descriptions that don't contain enough information - they're too short - could result in fewer hits, and ultimately, a smaller audience. Conversely, descriptions with too much unrelated information could result in more false positives. Descriptions should be no more than 150 words.

Viewing the Results

  • Results for your custom topics will begin to appear in your 5x5 S3 bucket, in the 'market_pulse/custom_topics/' folder, within 2-5 days. The file will update daily.
  • Custom topics are only available to the account that created them, they are not available to the general Maket Pulse feed. It is possible that a product/brand/technology becomes important enough to be added to the general intent feed, but it would be created separately from the custom topic
  • The schema for custom topics is the same as the general Market Pulse daily file, located here: https://docs.5x5coop.com/docs/market-pulse
  • At this time, if you wish to change the description of the topic, you will need to create a new topic. To delete topics that are no longer needed, please contact your 5x5 account manager.
  • The intent file can be used for digital, email, mail, or calling activation through the use of different linkage and data files, provided by 5x5. Your 5x5 account manager can help you get the files you need for any activation.
